freight market overview / 38th week, 2019
Global / Coke, Slabs, Billet, Steel Semis, Pig Iron, flat Products, long products, Scrap, Iron Ore
Transportation costs stabilized in the azov sea-river freight market after a small increase last week. Quotes for taking 3,000 t of steel scrap from Rostov-on-don to the Marmara Sea remained at $20-21/t.Demand for small-tonnage fleet is gradually improving in the Black Sea due to Russia recovering steel exports among other reasons. However, the numberof open vessels is excessive in both the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Only 10,000-15,000 dWT and 3,000-4,000 dWT vessel owners manage to slightly raise their rates in talks for transportation from Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria. The former are being supported by the strong Handysize market, while the latter by recent business activity revival in the Azov sea-river market. Freight rates on main destinations added $0.25-1/t. A 5,000 t steel shipment from Novorossiysk to the Marmara Sea is still quoted at $13-14/t. Quotes for taking 10,000 t of steel from Nikolayev to Algeria are at $25/t now.The North Sea coaster market continues to strengthen. The cargo traffic is recovering slowly despite a rising number of new cargoes as not all of those are firm. The number of open vessels slightly dropped in the basin due to adverse weather and ship delays among other reasons. Sea vessel owners are often successful in their continuous pushing for higher transportation costs. Freight rates added another EUR 0.5-2/t depending on the destination. A 3,000-4,000 t steel ship-

ment from St. Petersburg to the ARA ports is quoted at EUR 18-19/t now. A vessel to carry 3,000-5,000 t of steel scrap from Klaipeda to North Spain can now be booked at EUR 25/t.
